Château Tronquoy

Château Tronquoy, formerly known as Tronquoy-Lalande, is a wine estate in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux’s Médoc region, located around 60 km (37 miles) north of Bordeaux city. Known for its unique blend dominated by Merlot (over 50%), along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc, it produces a grand vin that has steadily gained recognition, despite not being a cru classé.

The château, with its notable 18th-century square towers, was nearly abandoned by the 1960s. However, it was revived in 1968 by Arlette Castéja-Texier, with support from négociant Dourthe. In 2006, Martin and Olivier Bouygues acquired the property. The estate’s 30-hectare (74-acre) vineyard, planted in gravel and clay soils, benefits from the moderating influence of the nearby Gironde estuary. Sustainable practices, including geothermal, solar, and wind power, support the winemaking process in the modern facilities built in 2010. Vinification occurs in stainless steel tanks, and the grand vin is aged for 12 months in French oak, with around 25% new barrels each year.

Château Tronquoy

At Château Tronquoy Lalande, vinification occurs in 22 geothermal-powered stainless steel tanks that enable parcel-by-parcel processing. These tanks are slightly tilted to capture higher-quality press wine without mechanical intervention, resulting in a softer, more elegant wine with enhanced finesse and fruit purity. The wine is then aged in 25% new French oak barrels for about 12 months before bottling.

Deep ruby red colour. Dominated by Cabernet aromas with lush notes of plum, spice, cedar, and licorice. Silky and initially restrained, revealing bramble, cassis, and savory acidity, with fresh tannins and a long, promising finish.

Region

The Bordeaux wine region, located in southwest France, is one of the world’s most famous and prestigious wine-producing areas. It is renowned for producing high-quality red and white wines with a unique balance of fruit, acidity, and tannins, influenced by its terroir and centuries-old winemaking traditions. Bordeaux wines are typically blended, a practice developed to enhance the complexity and balance of the wine, and include both red and white varieties.

Climate & Terroir

The Bordeaux wine region has a unique climate and terroir that heavily influence the style and quality of its wines. Bordeaux’s maritime climate, diverse soil types, and strategic location along rivers all contribute to its wine-growing potential, impacting everything from grape varieties to the age-worthiness of its wines.

Bordeaux has a temperate maritime climate, moderated by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary, which influence the region’s relatively mild temperatures and humidity. This is ideal for grape ripening, though it also brings challenges, especially regarding moisture and the risk of rot.

It’s terroir, which encompasses soil composition, topography, climate, and vineyard practices, is the essence of Bordeaux’s wine character. Bordeaux’s terroir is particularly complex due to its unique mix of soils, which differ from one bank of the Gironde estuary to the other, dividing the region into distinct sub-regions with particular wine styles.

Ideal drinking temperature 16° Celsius.
